Writing Contest: Create *Another* Another Faust!

img-582Dina and Daniel are happy to open the doors to their very first “retelling” contest!

Okay, so here’s how this works.  First of all, we want EVERYONE to enter (assuming, of course, that you’re not a professional. Unpublished writers only). You don’t have to be a longtime writer, or even an aspiring writer, or a certain age or live in any particular country (this is an international contest).  You DO have to write fluently in English (sorry! Though if you write in any of the languages we are trying to learn, we will read your story just for fun and practice)…

Here are the rules:

1) Write a 3000 word (max) retelling of the Faustian Bargain (”Another Another Faust”) set in any time, place, dimension, or world. Your story can be from any viewpoint, and you can get as creative as you’d like! Don’t exceed 3000 words, but don’t give us filler either. You can certainly tell an amazing story in just a few words.

2) Paste your story in the body of an email (attachments will not be opened). There should be no greeting or any other text besides the story in the body of the email. No need to explain the story background. The writing will say it all!

3) The subject line of the email should be in all-caps “WRITING CONTEST ENTRY - JOHN SMITH.”  Replace John Smith with your name.

4) Send the story to dviergutz@gmail.com by January 31, 2010.  If your entry doesn’t meet any of the above rules, it will not be read!

5) Five finalists will be selected by February 28, 2010. We will post all five finalists on our website for people to admire and comment. But in the end, D&D will choose the winner. The grand-prize winner will be announced in mid-March.

Now, here’s what you’re playing for:

A signed copy of Another Faust

A handwritten deleted scene

A featured article & interview on our website

An author’s galley of the sequel Another Pan

(And hey, impress us, you never know what can happen!)

Please feel free to pass this email along to everyone you know!! The more entries the better.  If you have a blog, we would appreciate a repost or a link!  We want to given lots of people the chance to complete and to find a truly talented winner!!

Now, start your fountain pens!

Dina and Daniel

Hey Dina & Daniel,

I only found out about Another Faust just recently, and as a massive fan of Dr Faustus I cannot wait to read it (though might be a while considering Australia takes ages to get the good books on the shelves)!

This contest looks equally awesome, and I’m so glad its based on merit! I look forward to reading the best entries (and submitting my own).

Here’s my post on the contest:

Also, is the sequel ‘Another Pan’ based on The Bacchae, by any chance? If so, I am in heaven. For reals.

I read your novel and wrote my review. I am by no means a professional reviewer. I do it because I want to share my thoughts on a good book or even bad one. So you can check it out at my website.

Is the next book a sequel to Another Faust or is it a totally different story? Just curious. I would like to read that one also and review when it is ready.. Thank you for this chance to host your contest.

I just recently found this book sitting alone on the shelf @ my local bookstore. It looked lonely, so I picked it up.

I’m still in the middle of reading it but once I’m done I think I’ll give this contest a shot. I’ve got nothing to lose after all.

Wow this contest is so inspiring, I mean talk about handing you an excellent idea to work with.
I will definitely write for this competition, your book is on my to read list, so I will be getting to it in the next couple of weeks.
I’ve never heard about a competition like this before, where you get to re-write part of the story.
So cool.

Contest sounds exciting, but a little confused so are we suppose to write something of our own on good and evil or write something that goes with the authors book. HELP!!

I just reacently, in November, and in the beginning of December found this site. I really cannot wait to read the top five entries, one of which will, hopefully, be mine (if not, I will still read the other enrties). I am really not a pro writer, but I still love writing and reading. Dina, Daniel, by creating this contest you have inspired me to show the world my writing (I normaly do not even share my writing in class unless i have too). So I want to thank you for that. Please let me know if either of you have an E-mail that I could mail you at where we could communicate.
By the way, the reason I have not used the comma is because it is broken. Sorry about that. I would have used something like-dont,or,cant,- but thats sloppy and I want to make a good impression on you. How else will you pick my entry for the contest? Just joking!

The Faustian Bargain is based on the story of Faust, who sold his soul to the devil. That’s the Faustian bargain.

Everyone, thank you for your enthusiasm!! We’re loving the entries so far. Keep ‘em coming!

As for your questions on the Faustian Bargain: a Faustian Bargain is simply a bargain in which you pay a very high price for what you think is important. For example, if you think money is most important and you take a job that makes you work 20 hours a day, and you end up losing all your friends, that’s a Faustian Bargain.

Of if you give up the love of your life, to move to Hollywood and become a star because you are desperate to be famous: that’s a Faustian Bargain. It’s a metaphorical “soul-selling” or “deal with the devil.”

The requirement is simply to have SOME kind of Faustian Bargain. It doesn’t have to be magic, or involve a real soul-selling. It can be metaphorical. Just SOME nod to the idea of a “deal with the devil” in any form you chose.

I hope that helps!

WOOHOO!!! I’ve submitted my story (my first real story since I was about 13…I’m now 31 :S) I have to say though, I forgot to put the title in the body of the e mail….can I resend it with the title at the top?

I just submitted my story-but it’s a day late. I wrote my entry in one day, because I realized the entry deadline was THIS WEEK. (I only got four hours of sleep…) BUT THEN, right before I could hit the nice little SEND button… my computer crashed, and I couldn’t send it until TODAY, FEB 1-aka, not JAN 31.
So sorry for the trouble, and if I doesn’t get read, I completely understand!
This is also my first time to submit to a contest. I don’t show off my writing alot, but I want to be an author more than anything. (I’m 13, though, so I’ve got some time…!)
Thanks for giving me the chance to enter~!
(Woah. When did this get so long?)
